Computing Infrastructure Overhaul
INSIGHT:
A commercial construction firm provisioned the services of IT21 to implement a network and server for their local and remote office. The company had experienced significant growth, and recognized the need to improve its communications delivery with internal and external staff. Key personnel of the business who required access to company files were not able to do so. A consistent file backup routine was not being followed, and critical company files were at risk. The partners realized their business was in need of a computing infrastructure overhaul.
ACTION:
IT21 met with the business partners to gain an understanding of the company direction. An assessment was performed to evaluate the processes and existing equipment inventory. As a result, a recommendation for procurement of hardware and software was developed and presented to the partners. A project plan for implementation was submitted and approved, upon which IT21 executed on-time and within budget. The new server and network infrastructure consisted of industry standard Tier 1 devices. Microsoft Exchange was implemented, as well as a server backup system and an automated schedule. A VPN Firewall appliance was implemented for secure remote access for key personnel.
RESULTS:
Security and remote access to critical data files for the construction firm was dramatically improved. Secure remote access to company data was implemented for remote users. The server and network devices were installed using IT industry “Best Practices,” with all hardware being “vendor supported” through extended maintenance service agreements. The components that were used to build the new infrastructure are scalable and will accommodate future demands as the company continues to grow.
Wireless Network Install
INSIGHT:
A rapidly expanding energy company procured the services of IT21 to implement a Local Area Network with multiple wireless access points in a newly acquired warehouse. The facility was new construction, and was also to be connected to the corporate office by way of a point-to-point T1. Security was of utmost importance, as several other office and warehouse tenants would be moving into the adjoining office complex. The corporate office had already implemented a firewall, and would be providing Internet access for the new warehouse. A VoIP system had also been installed at the corporate office, and intended to communicate to the new warehouse using VoIP phones.
ACTION:
IT21 met with the project manager/client and phone/cabling vendor to develop an implementation plan, as well as formulate an inventory of all computing hardware (including printers). The wireless access points were strategically located on construction drawings to ensure adequate coverage without unnecessary expense. IT21 technicians configured the wireless access points for maximum security and coverage efficiencies. The corporate firewall was configured to allow data traffic to and from the warehouse.
RESULTS:
The network equipment was installed per plans and met the client’s expectations for performance and value. The security concern for unauthorized access to the company network was adequately addressed with the proper configuration of business-grade network equipment. IT21 successfully implemented the network on budget.
Enterprise Technology Refresh
INSIGHT:
A plastics manufacturing company procured the support services of IT21 for their corporate and two regional offices. In addition to an aging server and desktop inventory, the company was plagued with printing issues and a beta version of document management software. Support for the infrastructure had been provided internally since implementation, with little or no consulting guidance for industry “best practices.” The owners realized the need for a better IT direction.
ACTION:
IT21 met with the business owners and formulated a priority task agenda. An inventory of all computing hardware (including printers) was conducted and a re-distribution of printing resources was established. All desktops were analyzed and “health checks” were conducted. The server backup software was updated and properly configured to include company-critical file backups. A technology refresh “priority list” was established for corporate budget planning purposes. Hardware maintenance plans were purchased for key servers with 24x7 service level agreements. Server operating systems and core business applications were scrutinized for future capabilities.
RESULTS:
The front office operations were improved with the consolidation and simplification of printing devices. Additional cost of new hardware was alleviated due to the re-distribution of existing assets. Significant risk factors to the business were reduced with purchase of server hardware maintenance. Purchasing of new desktop hardware is now a “budgeted and planned event.” Although the existing business processing systems are aging, a more stable environment has been established so that a long-term upgrade plan can be thoroughly investigated and methodically implemented.
Software License Compliance
INSIGHT:
A regional HVAC company approached IT21 for direction and support on their internal network and computer needs. The company had experienced significant growth, and historically maintained their systems with internal staff. Not having knowledge of proper licensing and industry “best practices” standards, the company became non-compliant with software distribution and inadequate hardware support. The owner realized the need to “clean-up” the computing environment after speaking with other business owners within similar sectors.
ACTION:
IT21 met with the business owner and internal support staff to identify the areas of weakness within the organization as it related to computer support. A high level inventory of hardware was conducted, as well as a systems check on each PC workstation. All areas of software were researched, including operating systems and applications. It was revealed that most of the OS software was pirated. Critical applications that were being used for business functions were found to be “freeware” and not licensed for business use.
RESULTS:
Upgrades to the software were purchased and properly licensed for business use. The “freeware” e-mail gateway was eliminated and Microsoft Exchange was implemented, reducing the server “farm” from two servers to one. The company is now and will remain license compliant.
BlackBerry Server Install
INSIGHT:
A National DME company approached IT21 to assist with the design, implementation and support of a BES Server farm hosting 300 Blackberry devices. The design and implementation had to be robust to handle large volumes of email utilized by the company’s delivery mechanism. BlackBerry devices had to be provisioned, rolled out and brought online in a 60 day period.
ACTION:
IT21 met with the V.P. of Technology and formulated a plan. Server equipment was recommended and procured from a tier one provider. The equipment was installed in the company’s datacenter. The BES software installed and the rollout plan executed.
RESULTS:
IT21 implemented the new hardware, which included extended service warranties from the manufacturer. The BES Software was installed and the BlackBerry devices were rolled out on time and under budget. The company is now positioned for unsurpassed service to its clients.
Equipment Relocation
INSIGHT:
A Commercial Contractor approached IT21 to assist with the design and project management of an office network relocation project. Although the company was well versed with commercial project management and construction, it lacked the time and technical expertise to engage in this area of technology.
ACTION:
Shutdown and movement of servers, network equipment, phone equipment and data/voice services would have to be coordinated with multiple vendors. Servers and networking equipment were scattered throughout the old facility. An IT21 Project Manager was retained by the Company to lead the technology portion of the office relocation. The PM met with the associated vendors and assisted the Company with the procurement of required equipment.
RESULTS:
The relocation of equipment was handled with minimal disruption to the business. With an extensive project plan, all work was completed in a timely fashion. The seamless relocation of equipment along with the expansion of the network into the new office area will serve the client well for years to come.
